An Introduction to Friends of Speedway

the Voice Magazine

Issue number one was produced in late 1999 by the then Editor, David Telfer who carried on to issue 19. After a short break the present Editor, Stuart Towner took over the reigns of the magazine with David still on board as a contributor. Stuart and his now wife Sue had regrettably stepped down as Directors of Wimbledon Speedway plc and he felt he had the time to devote to this new venture.

Coming from a printing background he endeavored to move the magazine on a pace with his own ideas etc.

Aims and Objects

To provide the Voice, a publication for speedway fans to share their views about the sport, exchange ideas and memories and to encourage others to find out what speedway is all about.

the Voice is a fans' forum and is written by contributors who have no obligation to anything, other than their favourite sport.

It is controversial to stimulate debate. Any criticisms voiced in this journal, be they of tracks, riders, management or other fans, will be constructive. The Editor reserves the right to refuse to publish anything that may be considered libelous, but will certainly include anything that warrants debate.

Our contributors don't just find fault, but give praise when warranted and criticism where justified.

We regularly contact the press and TV companies and badger them for more coverage of speedway racing, with some notable success and were the force behind the awarding of an MBE to former World Champion Peter Collins a while ago now.

Of late we have been encouraging our members to campaign for MBE's for Freddie Williams and for Mark Loram.

We also aim to encourage youngsters in speedway and were proud sponsors of the Under-15s 2009 championship series by supplying personalised race jackets for them and again in 2010.

To become a member and receive your associated editions of the Voice or to receive more information, please send your cheque or postal order for £10 (or Euros in cash) made payable to Friends of Speedway to:
